fungi Flashcards
fungi are
eukaryotic
non-motile
have a cell wall
what does cell membrane of fungi have?
ergosterol
what are the different forms of fungi?
yeasts
molds
dimorphic
how is fungi diagnosed in lab?
gram stain (candida only)
culture mostly with a special media
tissue bx
antigen testing
sporotrichosis is due to
dimorphic fungus
sporotrichosis symptoms and diagnosis
nodular/ulcerative lesions at site of inoculation
treat with itraconazole or potassium iodide
opportunistic mycoses
candida
aspergillus
rhizopus
aspergillus
mold that is found in soil and air and enters via respiratory tract
cryptococcus what is it
fungi found all over the world
found in soil and bird poop
yeast form only
cryptococcosis pathogenicity
capsular polysaccharide that resists phagocytosis, inhibits T cells, inhibits neutrophil migration
who is at risk for cryptococcosis?
those with impaired cellular immunity
AIDS, post organ transplant, hematologic malignancy, immunosuppressive therapy
clinical manifestations of cryptococcosis
pulmonary sx scant, fleeting infiltrate
meningitis is the most dire if untreated
skin/blood manifestations are uncommon
cryptococcosis diagnosis
cryptococcal antigen using CSF is more sensitive than India ink
cryptococcosis treatment
meningitis: amphotericin B +/-flucytosine
pulmonary: fluconazole
coccidioidomycosis fungi
C. immitis, dimorphic: mycelia and spherule
