Fundamentals of Synthesizer Programming Ch. 3 - Modifiers Flashcards
What are the two types of modifiers?
filters and amplifiers
What are the four common controls of filters?
- filter type
- filter cutoff and center frequency
- filter slope
- filter resonance
What are the four filter types?
- low-pass
- high-pass
- band-pass
- band-reject
What does a low-pass filter do?
lets low frequencies pass through
What does a high-pass filter do?
lets high frequencies pass through
What does a band-pass filter do?
passes specific frequencies while blocking frequencies above and below it
What does a band-reject filter do?
rejects specific frequencies whiles passing frequencies above and below it
What is cutoff frequency?
frequency where a LPF/HPF reaches -3dB of attenuation
What is a filter sweep?
manipulating cutoff frequency continuously with knob or slider
What is center frequency for band-pass filters?
frequency with no attenuation
What is center frequency for band-reject filters?
frequency with full attenuation
What is slope?
attenuation in dB per octave
What are poles?
number of stages in an electronic circuit used to build the filter
What does resonance do?
applies amplification
What does resonance do in a LPF/HPF?
boosts source amplitude at cutoff frequency (creates mini band-pass effect at cutoff frequency)
