Fundamentals of Radar Flashcards
What are the two types of radar?
Primary radar and secondary radar
What is primary radar?
Radar without beacons, echo only
What is secondary radar?
Radar with beacons (transponders)
What is resolution?
Ability to distinguish between targets
What are the 5 elements of primary radar?
Transmitter, Receiver, Duplexer, Antenna, Display
What control can eliminate ground clutter?
MTI (Moving Target Indicator)
What control can eliminate precipitation?
Circular Polarization
What is Anomalous Propagation?
Radar signal bent by moisture creating false returns
What is Temperature Inversion?
Radar signal bent by warm air over cool air creating false returns
What are false targets?
Spurrious targets produced by anomalous propagation or temperature inversion
What is electronic radar interference?
Unintentional interference with the radar
What is radar jamming?
Intentional interference with the radar
What are the two types of radar jamming?
Passive (chaff) and active (electroninc interference)
What are target fades?
Targets in areas with weak radar returns
What equipment is added to make secondary radar?
Interrogator
What transponder suffixes are used to indicate transponder with altitude readout?
/U does not have DME /A has DME /P TACAN capable /I RNAV capable /G GNSS (GPS) capable /W (/A with RVSM) /Z (/I with RVSM) /L (/G with RVSM)
What is ring around on a radar?
Improperly adjusted transponder causes radar to show multiple returns ringing around the radar
What are some advantages of secondary radar?
Better target reception, longer range, not bothered by ground clutter or weather
What are some disadvantages of secondary radar?
Doesn’t pick up primary targets, does not provide weather information, can get echos
What types of items are on a video map?
Airports, airways, boundaries, approach courses, obstructions, range marks
What is radar sweep?
Movement of the radar in a circular motion as it updates the display
What transponder suffixes are used to indicate RVSM capable?
H - Transponder or mode C inoperative
W - VOR navigation
Z - RNAV navigation
L - GPS navigation
