What is a Terminal Aerodrome Forecast?
Short statement of expected weather within 5NM of an airport, usually for a 24 hour period.
What is wind shear?
Change of wind (speed & direction) with height
In a TAF, what does TEMPO mean?
A temporary change expected to last less than half an hour.
In a TAF, what does PROB30 mean?
30% probability of an event.
What is an Area Forecast (FA)?
General description of clouds and weather over a large area.
What is an AIRMET?
Airman’s meteorological information. Widespread weather conditions of operational interest to aircraft.
What do AIRMET designators S, T, & Z mean?
S - IFR, T - turbulence, Z - freezing
What is the time schedule for AIRMETs?
Every 6 hours
What is a SIGMET?
Significant meteorological information. Widespread weather conditions that are nonconvective and potentially hazardous to aircraft.
What time schedule are SIGMETs issued?
As needed, valid for 4 hours.
What is a convective SIGMET?
SIGMET about severe thunderstorms.
What is a Center Weather Advisory?
Advisory issued by an ARTCC for air crews and flow control to anticipate and avoid adverse weather.
What is a Meteorological Impact Statement?
Flow control and flight operations planning forecast for 2-12 hours in the future. Issued by ARTCC.
What are Wind & Temperature Aloft Forecasts?
Computer generated forecasts used to select altitude for flight by pilot.
