fundamentals of histology Flashcards
which are the cells of acute inflammation eg:
acute pancreatitis, acute mastitis, cholecystitis etc?
Neutrophils - increased number
which are the cells of chronic inflammation eg:
chronic gastritis, duodenitis
Lymphocytes and plasma cells
in a condition, you see mainly neutrophils, some lymphocytes are around. what could it be?
ulcerative colitis - mainly chronic inflammation but an acute flare up can lead to presence of neutrophils
eosonophils are associated with which conditions?
allergic reaction eg even to cows milk
parasitic infection - schistosomiasis etc
Hodgkins disease
eosinophilic esophagitis may be due to?
allergic reaction to some food
mast cells are associated with ___?
allergic reaction
macrophages are associated with ___?
late acute inflammation
chronic inflammation eg granulomas
what are the characteristics of macrophages?
usually phagocytic
when they gather to form granuloma’s - they become secretory
what do you want to see in a sputum specimen to ensure a good bronchial sample?
macrophages with dark areas - they have phagocytosed toxins from air in alveoli
list some causes of granuloma formation?
sarcoid
TB - differentiate with ziehl-neelson stain
fungal infection
what are the features of squamous cell carcinomas?
keratin production
intercellular bridges
what are the features of Adenocarcinomas?
mucin production
glands - you know because when stained you find mucin (think tumours of large bowel)
how can ivx identify a melanoma?
take a biopsy, histology would show more melanocytes/pigment - the tumour is making melanin
whta is the stain for melanin?
fontana stain
give examples of histochemical stains and their indications?
Prussian blue - iron stain - haemochromatosis
Congo red - amyloid
