Fundamentals of Evolution, BIOGEOGRAPHY Flashcards
What can be seen from a fossil record (Increase^2)
- Increase in complexity
- increase in diversity ( Accumulation of Evolution)
- More extinct species (Failure to adapt to environment)
- Overall increase in size
Define Biogeography
is the study of where and how species occur
Explain Darwins theory with reference to a clustering of closely allied species
Darwin and Wallace observed that if species descended from a common ancestor then it would make sense that the closely related species would be located nearby and descent from common ancestor
What does biogeography suggest?
It suggests that in regions of same LATITUDE and CLIMATIC CONDITIONS: regions have same major groups but not same species
Examples ( Flat nosed and point nosed monkeys)
Explain distribution of species on oceanic islands
It shows EVIDENCE of descent with modification because island species are more closely related to species on the nearest mainland
Account for Biogeography of fossils
Darwin noted that the fossils of EXTINCT species resembled species living in same region
