Fundamental Stuff Flashcards
Energy Resource
basic source of primary energy
examples: coal, oil, wind
Energy Currency
energy has been processed.
in a format to provide a service
examples: electricity, gasoline
Energy Service
final end-use purpose of energy
the work that energy gets done
examples: lighting, heating, transportation
Energy Systems
primary energy –> energy conversion –> energy currency –> end-use tech –> useful energy –> service rendered
examples: coal–>powerstation–>electricity–>lamp–>radiant energy–>illumination
Resource Base
best estimate of all resource in existence
not concerned with tech/econ feasibility
Reserves
Estimate of amount feasible to extract on a tech and econ basis
Proved Reserves
known-to-exist. also feasible at todays prices and w/technology
some drilling/production data
Power vs Energy
Power is energy/time. Energy is energy
kW, J/s versus kWh, J
Capacity Factor
measure of utilization; 100% * (energy produced/maximum producible)
Heat Rate
ratio of useful energy in to useful energy out
usually in Btu/kWh
Efficiency
reciprocal of heat rate, unitless;
(3412 Btu/kWh)/(heat rate) * 100%
Load Factor
demand side equivalent of capacity factor;
energy consumed/ energy at peak demand;
avg power demand/ peak power demand
