Compare and Contrast Rapid Reading and Skimming

A

Skimming is a type of rapid reading. By definition rapid reading is used to locate the main idea or specific information in a short amount of time. Skimming is specifically used to locate the main idea and an overview of the text.

How is skimming done?

A

In skimming the fingers ares used to guide when reading across the line. The reader should also focus more on the first and last lines of the text for these are mostly the lines that contains the main idea.

How do we locate the main idea?

A

Using the skill of skimming, the reader can locate the main idea thus identifying the central message of the material. Main idea are usually on the first and last lines but it may also appear on the middle of the material. Main idea may also be simply be implied and is not stated directly or explicitly in the material. The process of locating the main idea includes identifying the topic or subject of the text, taking note of transitional devices like therefore, thus and etc. for this may signal the main idea. To validate the identified main idea the reader should analyze if all supporting details directly or in directly support the identified main idea.

A

Scanning is a quick reading strategy which aims to get specific information form a given text. The ways to develop this skill is firstly the reader should be clear with the specific information that he/she needs, the reader should also avoid reading every word and just focus on what he/she needs and relax his/her eyes as he/she move them across the lines f the text rapidly.

Compare and Contrast summarizing and paraphrasing

A

Both summarizing and paraphrasing requires citations. Summarizing is to condensed lengthy text into shorter passages with the essential topic sentences or thesis statement, summarized text usually contains 15-30% of the source material. Paraphrasing is use to restate ideas from the original text, it’s length is almost similar to the original text since it focuses on the details. Paraphrase is also use to simplify a complicated text, improve study skills and borrow ideas without quoting directly. To add, summarizing focus more in getting the main idea while paraphrasing are keen in keeping the details of the text.

Critical reading is the close and thorough evaluation of the claims in the text in terms of relevance, validity and logic. The skill includes distinguishing facts from opinions and detecting logical fallacies.

What are the types of reading?

A

There are four types of reading namely the developmental reading which is a systematic instructions which aims to develop the students’ reading skills, the pleasure reading as the more passive type of reading that primarily aims to provide enjoyment and entertainment. We also have functional reading that is designed to help students learn basic reading ability and the remedial reading that aims to correct the effects of poor teaching and poor learning.
