Fundamental Ideas Flashcards
What is the period is table?
A list of the elements
What is each element made of?
One type of atom
What are elements represented by?
Chemical symbols
What are the columns in the periodic table called?
Groups, the elements in a group have similar properties
What does a atom consist of?
A tiny nucleus surrounded by electrons
What are compounds p?
Two or more elements combined together
What does the nucleus contain?
Protons and neutrons
What are electrons?
My negatively charged particles that move around the nucleus
What is the charge of an atom?
No overall charge as the number of protons is the same as the number of electrons
What is the atomic number
Ethe number of protons
What is the mass number?
Total number of particles in the nucleus
Where is an electron in an atom?
In energy levels or shells
How are atoms arranged in the shells?
2,8,8
What does group number indicate?
Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell
Which group has a stable structure?
Group 8, noble gases
When a metal reacts with a non-metal what is formed?
Ions
Explain an ionic bond
Metal atoms lose an electron to form a positively charged ion and non metals gain one to become negatively charged p. The oppositely charged ions attract each other
What is the total charge of an ion?
Zero
When non metals combine what bonds are formed?
Covalent bonds which form molecules
What does the chemical formula tell you?
How many atoms of each particle have bonded together
What happens in chemical reactions?
The atoms in reactants rearrange themselves to from new substances
The mass of the products…
Equals the mass of reactants
How many elements are there?
About 100
