Q

Define Ion??

A

A charged Atom. An Atom with I difference of Electrons relative to Protons.

16
Q

Define Ionic Bonding??

A

A chemical bonding in which two or more Ions are linked due to their electrostatic attraction(opposite charges). Usually a metal with nonmetal.

17
Q

Define Molecular Formula??

A

Notation describing which Atoms form a Molecule.

Ex: 3 O2

18
Q

Define Structural Formula??

A

Two-dimensional representation of a Molecule describing the arrangement of its Atoms.

Ex: H
                     |
                H-C-H

                    H
Methane
19
Q

What are Reactants and Products??

A

Reactants: atoms chemically reacting to one another.
Product: the yielded Molecule.

20
Q

Describe an Ionic Compound??

A

A collection of the Atoms of two or more elements that have become linked through Ionic Bonding.

21
Q

What is a Hydrogen Bond??

A

The linking of an already covalently bonded hydrogen atom with an electronegative atom. Almost always pairs Hydrogen with either Oxygen or Nitrogen.

22
Q

Describe a Solution??

A

A mixture of two or more molecules, ions, or atoms that is uniform throughout (homogenous).

23
Q

What is a Solute??

A

What is being dissolved in a solution.

24
Q

What is a Solvent??

A

What is doing the disolving in a solution.

25
Q

Define Specific Heat??

A

The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of a substance by 1 Celsius.

26
Q

Describe Cohesion and Surface Tension??

A

Cohesion: the tendency for water molecules to stay together.

Surface Tension: caused by lack of attraction to air above them.

27
Q

What are Hydrocarbons??

A

Compounds made solely of Hydrogen and Carbon, such as Methane. They are Hydrophobic.

28
Q

Hydrophilic??

A

Compounds that form bonds with water.

29
Q

Hydrophobic?

A

Compounds that are nonpolar and cannot bond with water.

30
Q

What is the meaning of pH?

A

Hydrogen power.

31
Q

Define Acid??

A

Any substance that yields Hydrogen Ions when put in aqueous solution.

32
Q

Define Base??

A

Any substance that accepts Hydrogen Ions in aqueous solution.

33
Q

What is a Hydroxide Ion?

A

OH-. Strongly basic due to difference in charge to H+. Raises pH (Alkalinity).

34
Q

pH scale?

A

A Logarithmic scale used in measuring the acidity of a substance.
