Functions Yr 2 Flashcards
What is mapping
Any rule whicn associates two sets of items, referee to as the input and output
What is the domain!
The set in possible inputs
What is the range?
The set of possible outputs
What are the 4 main types of mappings?
- One to one (one input to only one output)
- One to many(one input to more that one output)
- Many to one (many inputs to one one output)
- Many to many (many inputs to many many outputs)
What is a function?
A mapping such that every element of the domain is mapped to exactly one element of the range (one to one and many to one)
How can you test if it is a function?
Vertical line test means it is a function
Vertical line and horizontal line test means it is one to one
What is the vertical and horizontal line test?
Vertical: a vertical line drawn anywhere on the graph must only touch the graph once
Horizontal: a horizontal line draw anywhere on the graph must only touch the graph once
What does the following notation mean
How do you find the vertical and horizontal asymptotes of a graph ?
What are the different ways of determining the range?
- Substitute in specific values
- Think about possible minimum/ maximum values
- Substitute in boundary values
Composite functions
What are the steps for finding the inverse of a function?
- Write the function as “y=..”
- Switch the x and y
- Rearrange to find y=
What is the domain and range of an inverse function?
The range of f(x) becomes the
How would you show the inverse of a function graphically?
Reflection in the line y=x
What is a modulus of a function?
For any input x there will always be a positive output
Can be represented as a reflection in the x axis for negative values.
How do you sketch y=|ax +b|
Think of turning point from original modulus function and then apply whatever is outside the brackets
DIAGRAM MUST ALWAYS BE DRAWN
What does the graph of y= |f(x)| and y= f(|x|) look like?
