Forces Flashcards
What type of force is thrust?
A force that prevents two objects coming together
What type of force is tension?
A force that prevents two objects moving away from each other
What type of force is weight ?
The size of the pull of gravity. Always acts vertically downwards
What type of force is resistance?
A force that opposes the motion is the particle
What type of force is friction ?
The resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another
What type of force is reaction force ?
When two objects come into contact, each exerts a force on each other : direction is perpendicular to surface of contact
What is equilibrium?
When a body is in rest/ constant velocity so no resultant force
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is how much matter there is in an object, while weight is a Measure of the size of the pull of gravity on the object
What is newton’s 1st Law?
A body will stay at rest or at constant velocity unless acted upon by a resultant force
What does the notation R(⬆️) imply?
The resultant force in the vertical plane- taking upwards direction as positive
Draw a force diagram of a ladder on rough ground leaning against a smooth wall
How can forces be represented in i-j notation
Can be added and subtracted normally
i is the positive x axis
What is newton’s second Law?
The resultant force is directly proportional to the acceleration experienced by a body
What is the double arrow notation used to show?
The direction and magnitude of acceleration
What physical quantities can be represented as a vector or a scalar?
Vector : force, acceleration, velocity, displacement
Scalar: mass, area, volume
Connecting particles questions
What is Newton’s 3rd Law?
When two bodies A and B are in contact, if body A exerts a force on body B, then body B exerts a force on body A that is equal in magnitude and acts in the opposite direction
How are pulleys different from connected particles?
The tension force doesn’t cancel out, so we can’t treat them as on body
