Functions of the skin Flashcards
What function of the skin am I?
Somatic sensory receptors detect stimuli that permit us to detect pressure, touch, pain, temperature, and other general senses.
Sensation
What function of the skin am I?
Skin is subtle, elastic permitting change in body contours without injury.
Flexibility
What does the skin secrete?
Urea/ammonia/uric acid
What function of the skin am I?
Phagocytic cells destroy bacteria.
Epidermal dendritic cells trigger helpful immune reaction by working with helper T cells.
Immunity
What function of the skin am I?
Temperature management including sweat and shivering
Body temperature homeostasis.
What does the skin provide protection from?
Microorganisms.
Chemical hazards.
Reduce damage to mechanical trauma.
UV exposure.
How does vitamin D production work?
Skin will take in UV rays and converts them to cholecalciferol. This is a precursor which is transported via the blood from the skin to the liver and kidneys where vitamin D is created.
