functions of the skeleton Flashcards
how many functions of the skeleton are there?
6
what are the 6 functions of the skeleton?
support
protection of vital organs by flat bones
movement
structural shape and points for attachment
mineral storage
blood cell production
what is support in the skeletal system?
helps posture
what is protection in the skeletal system?
flat bones protect soft tissue and vital organs
what is movement in the skeletal system?
tendons work with muscles and bones to help move the body
what is shape and points for attachment in the skeletal system?
tendon attachments allow movement to occur, bones give the body some shape
what is mineral storage in the skeletal system?
bones release calcium (bone strengthening muscles) and iron (makes collagen to help build bones) into blood
what is blood cell production in the skeletal system?
bone marrow inside bones create white blood cells, red blood cells and haemoglobin.
what is haemoglobin?
the protein that is present in red blood cells.
