Functions Of Stuff Flashcards
Renal artery
Supplies the kidney with fresh blood
Kidney
Excretes urine
Intergranal Lamella
Connects and separates grana
Chlorophyll
Absorbs radiant energy
Liver
In excretion: Manufactures bile pigments, ammonia and urea
in nutrition: manufacturers bile, deaminates amino acids, metabolizes glucose and breaks down alcohol, drugs and hormones
Alimentary canal/ gut
Excretes bile pigments
Lung
Excretes exhaled air
Skin
Secretes sweat
Ureter
Transports urine from each kidney to the bladder
Bladder
Muscular bag that stores urine
Urethra
Urine passes out of the body through it
Sphincter muscles
contract to close the urethra and relax to allow urine to flow out of the body in urination
Aorta
Provide oxygenated blood via renal arteries to the kidneys
Renal veins
Carry deoxygenated blood from the kidneys to the inferior vena cava
Renal papillae
Urine drains from it into the minor calyces and then major calyces, collecting in the pelvis
Pelvis
Large cavity leading to the ureter. Temporary storage of urine
Renal artery
Carries oxygenated blood into the kidney
Afferent arteriole
Leads to the glomerulus and provides blood to it
Efferent arterioles
Transport blood away from the glomerulus
Mouth
Ingests food. Contains teeth for mechanical digestion
Gall bladder
Stores bile until its release to the small intestine
Pyloric sphincter
Band od muscle that regulates the exit of food from the stomach
Small intestine
Final digestion of food. Most of the food is absorbed
Salivary glands
Secrete saliva, which moistens food and contains amylase
Oesophagus
Moves food to the stomach via peristalsis
Stomach
Mixes food into liquid called chyme. Some chemical digestion takes place
Pancreas
Secretes pancreatic juice containing enzymes. Also secretes insulin and glucagon
Colon
Absorbs water and forms faeces
Rectum
Stores faeces
Anus
Releases faeces during egestion
