Functions of different brain regions Flashcards
cerebellum
- hindbrain structure
- controls precision and co-ordination of movement
- detects differences in motor error between intended and actual movement
basal ganglia
- initiates voluntary movement, motor control
- procedural learning, habits
prefrontal cortex of the frontal lobe
- decision-making
- planning
- personality expression
motor cortex of the frontal lobe
- controls voluntary movements
somatosensory cortex of the parietal lobe
- processes sensory information related to touch, temperature, and pain
auditory cortex of the temporal lobe
processes auditory information
hippocampus of the temporal lobe
memory and learning, creating new memories (studied when investigating long-term potentiation)
amygdala of the temporal lobe
- emotional processing
- emotional responses
contains three different nuclei - basolateral, central and corticomedial involved mediating experience of fear, anxiety and aggression
visual cortex of the occipital lobe
processes visual information
medulla oblongata of the brainstem
regulates essential functions like breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure
pons of the brainstem
- sleep regulation/ sleep-wake cycle
- breathing
- unconscious processes
- some facial and eye movements
- nuclei relay information from the forebrain to cerebellum
midbrain of the brainstem
co-ordinates sensory and motor functions
thalamus
relay station for sensory information, directing it to the appropriate areas of the cortex
hypothalamus
- regulates basic survival functions = body temperature, hunger, thirst, circadian rhythms
- involved in the endocrine system’s control through the pituitary gland
cingulate gyrus of the limbic system
- emotions and cognitive functions , behaviour regulation
- regulates autonomic motor function
