Functions of cell structures Flashcards
What is the function of the cell membrane?
It keeps the cell contents in place.
Gases diffuse in and out through the cell membrane.
What is the function of the nucleus
It controls the cell
What is the function of the food vacuoles?
They secrete acids and enzymes to kill and then digest the prey.
Digested material is absorbed from the food vacuole into the cytoplasm.
What is the function of the pseuodopdoia?
They extend in the direction amoeba wishes to move.
The cytoplasm moves into the pseudopodia, causing the cell to move.
They are used to surround and engulf the prey.
As a result of the amoeba’s environment, explain the effects it has on the cell structure.
Amoeba live in fresh water. Its cytoplasm is more concentrated than its external environment.
Water enters amoeba by osmosis.
What is the function of the contractile vacuole?
The contractile vacuole collects water that enters amoeba.
It expands, touches the cell membrane and bursts to expel the water. It is responsible for osmoregulation
What would happen if amoeba had no contractile vacuole?
Without a contractile vacuole, the amoeba would expand and burst.
List the five points of the contractile vacuole needed for a diagram.
- Water enters by osmosis.
- Excess water enters contractile vacuole.
- Contractile vacuole swells.
- Contractile vacuole touches the cell membrane.
- Contractile vacuole expels excess water.
