15
Q

What is the circulatory system responsible for?

A

It’s responsible for moving blood around the body and is the transport system.

16
Q

What carries oxygen in the blood and where is it stored?

A

Haemoglobins carry oxygen and haemoglobin are found in red blood cells.

17
Q

What is blood a combination of?

A

Cells, cell fragments, liquid and dissolved substances.

18
Q

What do white blood cells do?

A

They fight against foreign cells such as disease-causing pathogens. White blood cells travel in the blood where they are needed.

19
Q

What are platelets?

A

Cell fragments that travel in the blood to places where cuts need to be blocked - until they heal and fill the hole.

20
Q

What chambers is the heart made of?

A

Four chambers: right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle and left ventricle.

21
Q

What does the right and left side of the heart do?

A

Left - pumps blood around the rest of the body

Right - pumps blood to the lungs to ‘drop off’ carbon dioxide and ‘pick up’ oxygen

22
Q

What do the valves of the heart do?

A

Valves are the structures that keep the blood flowing one way.

23
Q

What is a blood vessel?

A

A blood vessel is a tube that blood travels through and they vary in size depending on the amount of blood carried, the speed of the blood that it is travelling at and whether it’s picking up or dropping off substances.

24
Q

What are the three types of blood vessels?

A

Arteries, Veins and Capillaries.

25
Q

What are arteries?

A

They are blood vessels that have muscular, thick walls to squeeze blood along and to cope with high pressure. Arteries travel away from the heart.

26
Q

What are veins?

A

They are blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart to be pumped elsewhere.

27
Q

What are capillaries?

A

Capillaries are blood vessels that attach the arteries to the veins.
