Elements & Compounds Flashcards
What is a molecule?
A molecule is 2 or more atoms chemically joined together.
What is an element?
An element is a collection of atoms or molecules of the same kind.
What is a compound?
A compound is 2 or more elements chemically joined together.
What is a mixture?
A mixture is different elements or compounds joined together.
Explain the main concepts behind the particle model of matter.
All atoms have mass, are too small to be seen, cannot be created or distroyed, they are invisible, they are always moving and are slow when cold but speed up when heated.
What is an atom?
An atom is a single particle (no charge)
What is a chemical symbol?
Elements can be represented by symbols, which are shorthand method of writing the name of the element. 1 letter is always capital letters and the next is lowercase.
Recall the chemical formula for a common element and describe its usage.
Eg.
Gold, Au, used in making jewellery.
H, Ne and Cu are all common elements. Identify their names?
H - Hydrogen
Ne - Neon
Cu - Copper
