Changing Earth Flashcards
What is the inner core?
The centre of the Earth that reaches temperatures of almost 10000 degrees.
What is the outer core?
The layer after the inner core made mainly of metals such as iron and nickel. It is very hot and liquid, with temperatures ranging from 4000-6000 degrees Celsius.
What is the Mantle?
Third from the centre, the mantle is about 2800km thick with a temperature beginning at 500 degrees and ending at 3000 degrees Celsius. It is the main source of volcanoes and earthquakes.
What is the crust?
The crust is the thin outer layer of the Earth in which we live on. It is made up of rocks and minerals, and much of the crust is covered by water. It is thickest under the continents and thinest under the seas.
How is an igneous rock formed?
Igneous rocks are formed when magma from the inside of the Earth cools and solidifies.
How are Sedimentary rocks formed?
Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediments are pressed together over a long period of time.
How are Metamorphic rocks formed?
Metamorphic rocks are formed when other types of rocks are changed by extreme heat and pressure inside the Earth.
What are the layers of the Earth called?
The outer core, mantle, crust and the inner core
What is weathering?
Process in which rocks and minerals breaking down.
What is Physical Weathering?
Refers to the breakdown down of rocks by non-living things. This includes the effects of heat and cold on the rocks.
What is Chemical Weathering?
Chemical weathering refers to the chemicals in air and water which react to the chemicals in rocks.
What is erosion?
The process by which the products of weathering are moved and carried away elsewhere.
What is the rock cycle?

What are minerals?
A mineral is a naturally occurring solid substance with its own chemical composition, structure and properties.
What is the Moh’s scale of hardness?
Moh’s scale of hardness is a scale for identify how hard a mineral is, 10 at the top (being diamond) and 1 at the bottom (Talc). A mineral with a given hardness can scratch a mineral of a lower hardness, eg. diamond can stratch corundum (2) but corundum cannot scratch diamond.
