What is Parsons warm bath theory
The idea that when a man came home from work , he could relax into his family like a warm bath and it would take away the stress and refresh him for the next day at work.

He found 4 functions that were common in all families.

Parsons updated Murdock’s theory:
Argues that families teach primary socialisation (norms and values associated with their family) while other institutions such as schools teach secondary socialisation (universal norms and values).
He also argues that families helped prevent adults from behaving disruptively, instead encouraging them to conform to social norms. The family provides emotional support to its members. ( warm bath theory).
What are the criticisms of functionalist views?
conflict theories like marxists and feminists would argue that this paints a too idealistic picture of the family. Many people have negative experiences with family life.
