What is Merton’s strain theory?

A

Merton’s strain theory - states that people engage in deviant behaviour when they are unable to achieve socially approved goals by legitimate means. For example, frustration may resort to criminal means of getting what they want or they may lash out on others in their build up of anger.

They believe that crime and deviance is obviously a disruption to society however they do believe in some degree it can be functional to society - Positive Functions:

What is Durkheim’s Functionalist theory?

A

Durkheim’s Functionalist Theory - Functionalists argue that too achieve solidarity in society, society needs two things, socialisation and social control. This will bind individuals in society together, telling them what to strive for and how to conduct themselves.
