Functionalism Flashcards
Explanation of crime
Ineffective socialisation
As society becomes more complex, we have more choice, so lack norms and values
This creates anomie - don’t know the right way to behave under difficult or changing circumstances
Functionalist key theory
Crime is inevitable, it is a function - necessary as we need control over society in order to maintain value consensus
Boundary maintenance
reminds people of what is acceptable, sets boundaries which show people the consequences of crime
Adaptation and change
when people commit some crimes they show how society needs to change
Merton
Strain theory
