functional recovery Flashcards

1
Q

what is functional recovery?

A

example of plasticity, following physical injury/ other form of trauma eg infection/stroke. unaffected areas able to adapt/compensate for areas damaged

Q

how does functional recovery occur?

A
  • happens quickly after trauma (spontaneous recovery) + then slows down after weeks/months. rehab may be needed
  • brain rewire + reorganise itself by forming new synaptic connections
  • secondary neural pathways unmasked so new connections in brain activated and recover damage

what is recruitment of homologous area?

A

opposite hemisphere does specific task lost from damaged hemipshere eg Broca area damaged in left=right take over
