What are problematic behaviours?
Behaviours that are socially significant, affect others and the surrounding environment, safety of the person/others threatened, hinder the ability of the person/others to acquire new skills, lead to restrictive living arrangements
What is the function of behaviour?
To avoid or get something - can be seen as a form of communication
What is ‘positive’?
Behaviour is followed by something
What is ‘negative’?
Behaviour is not following by something/something’s removed
What is ‘social’?
Reward is given by somebody else
What is ‘automatic’?
Reward is done by yourself, no one else is involved
What is reinforcement?
Increasing the probability of the behaviour happening in the future
What is punishment?
Decreasing the probability of the behaviour happening in the future
What is positive reinforcement?
Behaviour increases because it’s followed by something
What is positive punishment?
Behaviour decreases because it’s followed by something
What is negative reinforcement?
Behaviour increases because it’s not followed by something
What is negative punishment?
Behaviour decreases because it’s not followed by something
What is social positive reinforcement?
Attention/access to things they like
What is an example of automatic positive reinforcement?
Scratching an itch
What is social negative reinforcement?
Escape/avoidance of a task we don’t like
