Ragland’s postural hypotension
-ask if patient has a preference for arm
- ask if patient has pacemaker or anything that will affect taking pulse)
-ask patient what their usual reading is, and if they tend to get dizzy when they stand.
patient lies supine as their blood pressure (systolic/diastolic).
next step: tell patient you’ll be taking pressure again, this time you’ll ask them to stand. if they feel dizzy, they can use you for support)
after, pump pressure cuff again, have them stand. once both feet are planted, release pressure and get systolic.
paradoxical pupillary reflex
things to consider:
- history of neurological disorders/seizures
- head trauma w/I last year
- lasik surgery w/I last year
- colored contacts
procedure:
to be done in dark room
- have patients adjust to dark room
- inform patient that you’ll be shining a light in each eye. tell them to focus on point straight ahead and try not to blink for 20 seconds
- measure 4-8 inches from temple using spand of thumb to pinky. shine light at temple and slowly move to 45 degree angle near eye.
