functional anatomy Flashcards
how many bones are in the human body
206
what are the bones held together
tough fibrous bands called ligaments
list 4 functions of the musculoskeletal system
- create movement
- protect vital organs
- circulate blood
- produce heat
list 3 functions of the muscular system
- allow mobility
- circulate blood
- provide stability
why do skeletal muscles pull on bones
create movement and give the body shape
what are the skeletal muscles capable of
contracting or shortening, extending or lengthening
what is the axial skeleton
all bones along the body’s vertical axis, they remain stationary
what is the appendicular skeleton
all the bones attached to the axial skeleton, all of the limbs
what is the sagittal plane
split the body into left and right
what is the parasagittal plane
runs parallel to the sagittal plane. splits the body into uneven halves
what is anterior and posterior
anterior - front view of the skeleton
posterior - back view of the skeleton
what are the properties of a type 1 muscle fibre
red, slow twitch aerobic pathway low contraction speed endurance runners fuel source - triglycerides
what are the properties of a type 2 muscle fibre
white, fast twitch anaerobic ATP pathway rapid contraction speed sprinters fuel source - chemical fuel (creatine phosphate and glycogen)
list 5 functions of the skeletal system
- allow movement
- blood cell reproduction
- store nutrients
- provide a framework
- protect vital organs
what is an antagonist pair
two muscles that work together
describe how an antagonist pair works
as a muscle contracts it pulls on a bone
what happens when a muscle stops contracting
muscles will return to their original length in a state of contraction
what happens once a muscle moves to contract a bone
another muscle must contract to return the bone to it’s original position
what is the agonist and antagonist in a bicep curl
agonist - bicep
antagonist - tricep
what is antagonist
the muscle moving with the opposite action
what is the agonist
the muscle principally involved in producing movement
what happens when u increase tension
certain muscles act to hold other joints in place to allow controlled movements at a particular joint - the stabiliser
define insertion
the attachment site that does move when the muscle contracts
define origin
the attachment site that doesn’t move during contraction
