Function Flashcards
Linear Relationship
A relationship with a constant rate of change that creates a straight line when graphed
Relation (in math)
A connection between values. Math relationships are usually between x values (inputs) and y values (outputs) and can be shown as ordered pairs, tables of values, mapping diagrams, or graphs.
Dependent Variable (in functions)
The outcome of solving a function using the independent variable. y generally represents it.
System of Linear Equations
A group of two or more equations where the factors, or unknowns, are the same. The answer is where all of the lines meet.
Independent Variable (in functions)
The input into a function, representing the variable that is known. Normally, it is represented by the variable x.
Term
Each part of an expression that is separated by a + or - sign.
Linear Equation: Slope-Intercept Form
The slope (m) and variable (x) are added to the y-intercept (b) to write a linear equation (y = mx + b).
Quadratic Equation
An equation where the highest exponent of the variable is 2.
Inequality
A statement that 2 expressions are not equal.
Quadratic Equation: Standard Form
The quadratic equation written as y=ax*2+bx+c, where a, b, and c are coefficients
Function
A special type of relation where each input has only one output.
{(0, 2), (2, 3), (3, 4), (5, 6)}
Perpendicular Lines
Lines that intersect at a right (90º) angle.
Their fractions have been flipped and their slopes are opposite reciprocals.
Slope Formula
slope = Change in y/ change in x
Variable (in functions)
A letter or non-numeric symbol that represents an unknown value.
Quadratics: ROXS
ROXS is a way to remember that roots, 0’s (zeroes), x-intercepts, and solutions all refer to the same part of a parabola
