Connections Flashcards
Formal Reasoning
using logic and math to come to a decision
Deductive Reasoning
by drawing a conclusion from two or more known facts
Ex: All cats say meow. (premise #1)
Jackie is a cat. (premise #2)
Therefore we can deduce that Jackie says meow. (conclusion)
Informal Reasoning
used to answer questions and solve problems that are difficult and don’t have a clear answer.
Complex and open-ended.
Ex: Feelings over logic
Inductive Reasoning
Taking what you know from one area and applying it to another
Ex: A new drug’s link with improved health in a random sample of a population suggests it will help others in the population.
Algorithms
Systematic ways of solving problems that always lead to the right answer
Conjectures
tries to do math by guessing without proof
