Fuels Flashcards
Fuels
A substance that burns in oxygen and produces heat
Fossil fuels
Formed from the remains of organisms that lived millions of years ago.
Organic compounds made of living things
Hydrocarbons
When burned carbon dioxide and water vapour is produced
The fire triangle
Oxygen, heat, fuel is needed to make a fire
Fossil fuels +____________=water vapour+________________
Fossil fuels + oxygen= water vapour and carbon dioxide- hydrocarbons
Coal
Formed from trees and ferns that died and were buried and compressed under swamps
Oil
Formed from animals and plants that lived in the sea. Their remains were buried under layers of sand on the sea bead. As the pressure increased, they eventually formed oil
Greenhouse effect
Some sunlight that hits the earth and is reflected. Some becomes heat.
CO2and other gasses in the atmosphere trap heat, keeping the earth warm
Acid rain
Acid gasses (sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides released into the atmosphere) Gas dissolves in rain water to form acid rain, acid rain kills plant life and pollutes rivers
Sulphuric acid
When coal burns it turns into sulphur dioxide, the gas dissolves in rainwater forming sulphuric acid
Nitric acid
Car exhausts emit oxides of nitrogen. They dissolve in water vapour in the atmosphere and form nitric acid
3 effects of acid rain
Kills plant life
Pollutes rivers
Erodes stone work
