Fuels Flashcards
What is crude oil?
A mixture of hydrocarbons
What is Fractional distillation?
Fractional distillation is used to separate crude oil into more useful products
What is the order of FD?
Gas Petrol Naptha Kerosene Diesel Fuel oil Bitumen
What is the acronym to remember the order of FD?
Good People Never Kick Dogs For Barking
What are hydrocarbons?
Hydrocarbons are compounds that only contain hydrogen and carbon atoms
What can each hydrocarbon be used for?
Gas- cooking, heating Petrol- fuel for cars Naptha- lighter fluid Kerosene- jet fuel Diesel- fuel for lorries Fuel oil- fuel for ships, power stations Bitumen- tar
What is a fuel?
A fuel is something that can be burned to release heat and light energy Wood Oil Gas Coal
Give three examples of crude oils
Crude oil
Natural gas
Coal
What hydrocarbons are found in crude oil?
Gas Petrol Naptha Kerosene Diesel Fuel oil Bitumen
What does non- renewable mean?
We can’t make any more, once it’s gone it’s gone
What are the 4 Biofuels?
Biogas
Wood
Bio ethanol
Bio diesel
What are the Pros of Biofuels?
Renewable
crops use up carbon dioxide and produce oxygen
when growing /photosynthesising
• carbon neutral because the carbon produced during
combustion is used when growing the plants
• does not use up crude oil/non-renewable resources
What are the cons of biofuels?
crops grown for bio-fuels use up land
• land could otherwise be used to provide homes / less
farmland available for growing food crops
• lots of crops required to provide a small amount of
bio-methane
• bad season reduces availability
• carbon emissions due to transport and production if
qualified
What does carbon neutral mean?
The same amount of carbon dioxide is given out as taken in
What makes a good fuel?
Renewable Can ignite easily Flammable Doesn't produce too much soot, burns cleanly High energy output Doesn't produce toxic gases Carbon neutral
