Combustion Flashcards
What is combustion an example of?
Oxidation, the hydrocarbons react with the oxygen in the air
What is released when a fuel burns?
Carbon dioxide
Water (vapour)
What is released when incomplete combustion occurs
Carbon monoxide and carbon instead of carbon dioxide
Water (vapour)
Carbon is released as soot
What is incomplete combustion?
When a fuel burns, if it doesn’t have enough oxygen it is incomplete
What is complete combustion?
If all the hydrocarbons is used up and the only products are carbon dioxide and water
What is combustion?
The burning of a substance
What causes acid rain?
Sulphur dioxide
How is sulphur dioxide released?
Sulphur is an impurity in coal, when coal burns, the sulphur reacts with oxygen in the air
What is the sulphur dioxide word equation?
Sulphur + oxygen –> sulphur dioxide
How is sulphur dioxide turned into acid rain?
It dissolves in water droplets
When calcium carbonate is heated strongly it undergoes thermal decomposition.
Suggest what could be done to confirm that the decomposition was complete.
Heat it again, mass after heating stays the same
Why is calcium carbonate used to treat waste gases in coal-fired power stations
Neutralises the waste gases such as carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen
Why is calcium carbonate used to treat waste gases in coal-fired power stations
Neutralises the waste gases such as carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen
What is the word equation for complete combustion
Hydrocarbon + oxygen-> carbon dioxide + water
What is the word equation for incomplete combustion
Hydrocarbon + oxygen -> carbon monoxide + carbon (soot) + water
