fuels Flashcards
what is a fuel?
a fuel is a substance that burns to produce heat energy
what does a finite resource mean?
it means that eventually the resource will run out
why were fossil fuels given there name?
they were formed from living organisms over millions of years ago
what do fossil fuels include?
crude oil,gas and coal
why is crude oil heated?
so that fiffdrent hydrocarbons can seperate into groups of otehr hydrocarbpons with similar boiling points and size.this is called fractioning.
what is the proccess in which crude oil is made into fractions called?
fractional distillation
where does fractional distillation take place?
in a fractionating tower or column
what is a common use of gas?
botles gas for hesting up barbecues
what is the typical range of carbon molecules for gas?
1-4
what is a common use of petrol?
it is used in cars for fuel
what is the typical range of carbon molecules for petrol?
5-8
what is a common use of naptha?
it is used for different plastics after being cracked
what is the typical range of carbon molecules for naptha?
6-11
what is a common use of diesel?
it is a common fuel in vans lorries and cars
what is the typical range of carbon molecules for diesel?
9-15
what is a common use of residue?
it can be used as different oils and grease for polishing/greasing
what is the typical range of carbon molecules for residue?
15-25
what is a common use of bitumen?
used as a surface layer for roads
what is the typical range of carbon molecules for bitumen?
> 25
what does viscosity mean?
it is a measure of the thickness of a substance
what does flammability mean?
it is a measure of how easily a substance catches on fire
