fertilisers Flashcards
what is a fertilizer essential for?
ensuring that there is a good supply of good quality food
what gets removed from the soil when a plant grows?
nutrients
how are nutrients replaced in the soil?
farmers will spread fertilisers on the soil to ensure there will be enough nutrients to give the high fields of crops.
what are the two types of fertilisers?
synthetic and natural
how is a synthetic fertiliser made?
it is made by man in a lab a neutralization reaction
what can synthetic fertilisers be made of?
ammonium salts, potassium salts and nitrate and phosphate salts
what is a natural fertilizer made of?
decaying plants or animal materials.compost or manure
what are the 3 essential plant nutrients for healthy growth?
nitrogen,phosphorus and potassium
why do fertilizers have to be soluble in water?
they have to be soluble in water so that hey can be taken up by the roots of the plant
give an example of a neutralization reaction?
potassoium hydroxide+nitric acid->potassium nitrate+water
what is a problem of fertilizers?
they can be easily washed out of soil by rain and carriued into streams rivers and lakes
what happens as a result of the fertilizers being washed away?
it then causes the plant to grow rapidly which then means in the water it is being choked up by plants
