Fuel Systems Flashcards
5 locations where fuel can be brought in
CONREP Station 4 (Port side, foc’sle)
CONREP Station 3 (STBD side, foc’sle)
CONREP Station 8 (Port side, AFT)
CONREP Station 7 (STBD Side, Missile deck)
Astern Fueling - Removed but normally piped in from the bow, Port Side. UNREP ship drops the fuel probe in the water and we pick it up and hook it up to the ship. As the UNREP ship steams ahead of us, they send fuel to us and refilling the storage tanks
How is fuel purified?
By use of a centrifugal purifier, uses centrifugal force to throw the water and/or sediment to the outside while clean fuels falls through the center
Where can fuel be purified?
Main 1 Lower Level
Main 2 Lower Level
Using the F/O purifier
Fuel Transfer Pump
110 GPM x 45 PSI
Supplies fuel from the fuel storage tanks to the purifier
Located in: Main 1 and 2
Fuel Service Heater and Fuel Transfer
Located in: Main 1 and 2
One service heater and transfer heaters per space
Used to warm up the fuel to help separate the contamination
Fuel Oil Storage Tank Groups [6]
Group 1 -5- FWD STBD Group 2 -4- FWD Port Group 3 -3- Midship STBD Group 4 -3- Midship Port Group 5 -2- Aft STBD Group 6 -2- Aft Port
Seawater Compensating Stations [3]
Located in: Main 1 and 2, 3 GTG
What do the Seawater Compensating Stations do?
Seawater is pumped into the fuel storage tanks by the fireman system to assist with buoyancy and stability.
As fuel is removed, seawater is added automatically to retain buoyancy. Since water is heavier than fuel the ship will sit lower in the water when we are running low on fuel.
As we refuel the ship, the fuel pushes the seawater outside of the ship returning the storage tanks to a full level of fuel.
What is JP-5 fuel? (F44)
Located in NR3 GTG room
Used to refuel the helos
Can be used as an emergency source of fuel for the GTMs/GTGs
