Frostbite, Hypothermia Flashcards
1
Q
types of frostbite
A
- superficial frostbite
- full thickness frostbite
** can only tell which one after rewarming areas!
2
Q
Superficial frostbite
A
- clear/ milky colored blister formation
- swelling and redness
- blisters extend to top of digits
3
Q
Frostnip
A
- superficial freezing of tissues, skin is soft to touch so not completely frozen

4
Q
Full thickness frostbite
A
- dark/ blood filled blisters
- ## blisters do not extend to top of digits

Q
Stages of hypothermia
A
- cold stressed
- mild hypothermia
- moderate hypothermia
- severe hypothermia
6
Q
cold stressed
A
- cold and shivering
- A and O times 4
- can move normally
- signs of compensation as body is trying to produce heat
7
Q
mild hypothermia
A
- shivering
- A and O times 4, conscious
- *impaired movement, diminished CSM
8
Q
moderate hypothermia
A
- can’t shiver anymore
- LOR and A and O goes down
- extreme impairement of movement
9
Q
severe hypothermia
A
- cold and unconscious
- can go into cardiac arrest , doesn’t mean they are dead
10
Q
hypothermia treatment
A
- if conscious and open airway, give them food and water
- warm clothing, remove cold layers
- evacuate if don’t improve within 30 minutes of interventions
- put warm things to cushion around them
- no body to body warming!
- handle like glass, no walking!
11
Q
Types of hypothermia
A
- immersion
- general
- urban
12
Q
Immersion
A
- immersion in water, drowning
- can happen instantaneously
13
Q
General
A
- gradual onset, the 4 stages
