From Neurons to Psychophysics Flashcards
What does sensory trandsuction do?
Convert physical energy into electrical signals
Hoe do receptor potentials code stimulate intesnity?
By gradations in amplitudes - hyper or depolarising
What the relationship between range and sensitivity?
Large dynamic range comes at cost of sensitivity to intensity deifferences
What is fractionation?
different R with different ranges
What is psychophysics?
Measuring sensation and perception by separating conceptualising physical stimulations and associated sensation
What is physical intensity?
Power per unit area (Watts per m²)
What are the 2 basic approaches to looking at intensity?
Scaling: ordering stimuli along a perceptual dimension
Threshold: measuring limits of sensitivity
What is absolute threshold?
The weakest stimulation intensity
What is difference threshold?
The smallest difference between 2 stimuli that observers can discriminate - subject to response bias
