From Intersectional feminist theory Flashcards
Who is Sojourner Truth?
Feminist in the US. Famous for the speech “Ain’t I a Woman?”. She introduced the idea of intersectionality, as she was a black feminist
What is a premise underlying in the previous models of intersectionality?
There was an idea that you are one of two opposites. You’re either black or white. Man or woman etc. It disregards the fact that you can very well be both in different situations
What is a second premise underlying in the previous models of intersectionality?
That you can rank different categories in a meaningful system. In this way, you are expected to look at yourself and rank which parts of you would suffer more discrimination, but this ranking is useless
What is “multiple consciousness”?
it challenges the idea of the premises mentioned. You’re not supposed to divide yourself up into different categories, where each category can be ranked. Multiple Consciousness acknowledge that your identities interact dynamically
