Cognitive mechanisms of antidepressants
A
1) processing biases: Depression is associated with the tendency to perceive social cues as more negative, to preferentially attend to aversive information, and to recall negative more than positive information concerning oneself
- antidepressant administration increases the relative processing of positive versus negative affective information
- changes affective processing early on
- Antidepressant treatment reverses overactive limbic system associated with emotionally salient stimuli (happens BEFORE mood changes)
