How to make problem sets to practice?

  • in making your own set, do 8-12 questions max!
  • in actual test it’ll be 31 quant and 36 verbal

  1. # of questionsStart out with 3-5 problems. As you gain experience and add topics, use you’ll increase the size of sets
  2. Type of problem and content
    For quant, always do a mix of PS and DS

For verbal, mix at least 2 of the 3 types

Ideally to pick questions randomly so that you don’t know what you are about to get

Timing for problem sets and exam

A

Quant questions - 2 minutes for each questions

Verbal
Sentence correction (SC) - 1 min 20 seconds
Critical reasoning (CR) - 2 min
Reading comprehension (RC) - 2 min for shorter passage and 3 min for longer passage. Then add 1min and 30 sec for each problem. Select 3-4 problems - no more even if the OG passages have 5-7 problems

Review/ reflect in your problem set

A

1st level of review

  • review the set as a whole
  • did you make the appropriate decisions about how to spend your time and mental energy?
  • if, in hindsight, you realize that you really should have cut a problem off a lot faster, then figure out the moment at which the scale should have tipped

Tips for quants problem

A
  • when reading question, it’s critical to write down what the question asks you to solve
  • reviewing and dissecting the question is the most important thing you need to do to get the fundamentals right
  • copied the questions that were out of the ordinary or where concepts were tricky and do them several times
  • for all questions, master the following
    1. Do I know why every wrong answer is wrong?
    2. Double check for tricks and shortcut
    3. If something in the stem was changed, would I still know how to solve the problem?

How to learn from errors

A

keep an error log And review this log at least once a week
for each error, keep track of the following:
1. The basics
- where the problem can be found again in your materials
- the question type to which the problem belongs
- the content category being tested
- time you spent
- current date

  1. The error
    - type of error: careless errors, content errors (knowledge errors) and technique error
    - copy your error in
  2. The reason
    - why did you make that error

  • It is critical to keep track of your thinking fort every answer choice
    First write down A B C D E vertically, just as the answer bubbles appear on the screen and consistently use 3 distinct symbols for right, wrong and may be
