Q

What is friction?

A

When one object slides over another object, friction tries to stop the movement. Friction is the resistance to motion of one object moving relative to another.

Q

What is static friction?

A

Static friction exists between two surfaces that aren’t moving relative to each other.

Q

What is dynamic friction?

A

Dynamic/kinetic friction acts between objects that are in motion.

Q

There are two factors that affect the magnitude of the frictional force name them:

A

(i) the nature of the two surfaces i.e. how rough or smooth (Smooth surfaces have less friction than rough surfaces)
(ii) the force with which the two surfaces are pressed together. (If two surfaces are pressed tightly together, the friction between them increases)

Q

Methods to reduce friction are: (5)

A

Polishing (the process of creating a smooth and shiny surface by rubbing it or by applying a chemical treatment)

Lubricating( using a lubricant, like oil, to reduce friction and wear and tear in contact between two surfaces)

Separating the surfaces by air (air hockey)

Rolling instead of sliding (wheels)

Streamlining (design or provide with a form that presents very little resistance to a flow of air or water, increasing speed and ease of movement like aerodynamics for a plane, like the design of it basically)
