Forces Flashcards
What is a force?
By definition, a force is a push OR pull, exerted by one object on another
Forces are measured in what?
Newtons, N.
There are different types of forces what do they depend on?
what objects are being affected by the push or pull.
What are the examples of forces?
- Normal Reaction force
- Applied force
- Gravitational force
- Electric force
- Magnetic force
- Nuclear force
- Frictional force
- Air resistance
- Tension
There are four MAIN effects of a force name them:
(i) A FORCE CAN CHANGE AN OBJECT’S STATE OF MOTION (Since a force can cause a stationary object to start moving and a moving object to stop moving)
(ii) A FORCE CAN CHANGE THE SPEED OF AN OBJECT. (Can cause the object to reduce speed or increase speed, depending on the direction of the applied force.)
(iii) A FORCE CAN CAUSE A MOVING OBJECT TO CHANGE DIRECTION
(iv) A FORCE CAN CHANGE THE SHAPE AND SIZE OF AN OBJECT
What is a vector quantity?
(i) vector quantities - the quantity is fully described when both magnitude and direction are stated.
E.g. force, displacement, velocity, acceleration, momentum…etc
What is a scalar quantity?
ii) scalar quantities - the quantity is fully described when its magnitude only (numerical value) is stated. This means direction does not matter
E.g. time, mass, distance, speed, energy, area, volume…etc
How can vector quantities be rep?
Vector quantities can be represented in size and direction by an arrow, where the length of the arrow indicates the magnitude
Negative signs in vector quantities
Direction is taken into account by introducing a negative sign. The negative of a vector is a vector with the same magnitude but with opposite direction
the longer the line,…
the greater the magnitude of the quantity being measured.
Direction can be given with respect to an angle using trigonometry.
sin= opp/hyp
cos= adj/hyp
tan= opp/adj
this is multiplied by the angle (theta)
We use Pythagoras to find the hypotenuse or a missing side
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
side square + side squared = hypotenuse squared
