The part that we control and are aware of
What is the preconscious mind?
Just below the conscious that we are semi-aware of
What is the unconscious mind?
what we are unaware of
What is stored in the unconscious mind?
- traumas
- repressed memories
What are the three personalities?
ID, ego & superego
What is our ID?
Our impulsive instincts and the most primitive part of us
What are features of the ID?
- not knowing right from wrong
- demands instant gratification
- lies in our unconscious mind
- pleasure principle
What is our ego?
Our reality which develops soon after birth
What are features of our ego?
- acts as a mediator between our ID and the world
- balances our ID and superego
- lies in our preconscious mind
- reality principle
What is our superego?
Our morality and judgement
What are features of the superego?
- creates guilt and anxiety
- lies in all parts of our mind so we are fully aware
What is a Freudian slip?
An unintentional error that reveals subconscious feelings
What are examples of Freudian slips?
- calling someone the wrong name
- misquoting or misinterpreting a written or spoken word
- using the wrong word
What is the psychosexual stages of development theory?
A theory that personality is based on libido - this moves around different areas of the body during childhood as we pass through stages of psychosexual development
What is libido?
Sex drive
What are the 5 stages of psychosexual development?
1- oral stage (birth-1)
2- anal stage (1-3)
3- phallic stage (3-5)
4- latency period (5-puberty)
5- genital stage (puberty-death)
What is the oral stage?
Fixation of the mouth
What are important influences of the oral stage?
- breastfeeding
- weaning onto solid foods
What are consequences of neglecting the oral stage?
- smoking
- seeks oral stimulation
- manipulative personality
What is the anal stage?
fixation on the anus
What are important influences of the anal stage?
potty training
What are consequences of neglecting the anal stage?
a rigid personality
What is the phallic stage?
Fixation on the phallus (penis)
