- boy desires mother
* boy realised father has relationship with mother

- lived with family opposite coaching inn - afraid to leave house
- afraid of horses falling & making noises with their feet
- most afraid of horses drawing carts, that would bite him
- esp. afraid of white horses with black around the mouth wearing blinkers
What did Freud say Han’ fear of horses represent?
Fear of father castrating him
Describe Hans’ dream of the two giraffes
- big & small giraffe
- Hans took small giraffe away and big one cried out for it
- Hans then sat on small giraffe
What did Freud say Hans’ giraffe dream represents?
Hans getting in bed with his parents in the morn & the dad not wanting Hans to take the mum away, but he does anyway
Describe the dream of the two plumbers
- plumber took away Hans’ behind with a pair of pincers and then gave him another
- repeated with penis
What did Hans’ father say the plumber dream represented?
Hans wanting to be like his father
Describe the grandad dream
- Hans had his own children and his mother was their mother
- father was the grandad
- made father no longer a threat as a result of Hans’ affection for his mother
What did Freud say Hans’ grandfather dream represents?
Evidence of the Oedipus theory - affection for mother - once Hans acknowledged this his problems would be resolved
What are the advantages of the case study?
• 1 person, more focused - in depth study of behaviour
What are the disadvantages of the case study?
- 1 person so not representative, can’t be generalised to target pop
- may develop relationship with Hans, subjective bias
What is an issue with the sample?
1 person, difficult to generalise
How valid is the data?
Very - especially ecologically valid as it was done through a parent at home
