earlier, “safer” time of life
Sublimation
Dangerous urges are transformed into
positive, socially meaningful motivations

ID
Id – guided by the Pleasure Principle
ID
- Guided by the Pleasure Principle
- Instinctual needs, drives, & impulses
- Sexual; fueled by libido (sexual energy)
Ego
- Guided by the Reality Principle
- Seeks gratification but guides us to know when we can & can’t express our wishes
- Ego defense mechanisms protect us from anxiety
Superego
- Guided by the Morality
Principle - Conscience; unconsciously adopted from our parents
Resistance
Oppositional behavior when an individual’s unconscious defenses of the ego are threatened by an external source.
Transference
A phenomenon in psychotherapy in which there is an unconscious redirection of feelings from one person to another
Latent content of dreams
The hidden psychological meaning of the dream
Manifest content of dreams
The actual images, thoughts, and content contained within the dream
Implicit thoughts
- Thoughts and feelings are “implicit” if we are unaware of them or mistaken about their nature
- Implicit biases are influenced by experiences, although these attitudes may not be the result of direct personal experience.
- Implicit attitudes however are less controlled and more emotional and are better at predicting behaviors sharing those qualities, like impulsive behaviors
Unconscious thought
The unconscious mind is a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that are outside of our conscious awareness
