Freshwater: Sacramento River Flood Control System - flood mitigation Flashcards
What was the strategy put in place to deal with the floods?
Sacramento River Flood Control Project
What were wrong with the levees?
- Many designed by farmers long ago and do not meet current design standards.
- they have geotechnical concerns such as seepage, stability and erosion problems that could easily fail during a storm event.
What is the cause of the inland sea due to natural occurrence?
seasonal runoff from nearby mountain ranges flows into the valley, spills over river banks and flows for miles across the valley floor.
Why is this inland sea a problem? What should be done to alleviate this problem?
because of millions of people now living in the region and billions of dollars of industry and agriculture at risk.
Should be alleviated by routing floodwater elsewhere which is achieved through the project including, levess, dams, weirs, and bypasses surrounding the rivers.
Location?
California Central Valley
Relief of land?
Large, flat, region stretching about 450 miles through the centre of the state.
