FRESHWATER KEY TERMS Flashcards
Using less of a resource so it will not be used up.
Conservation
Process of water seeping into the ground.
Infiltration
The change of water vapor into liquid water droplets.
Condensation
Water that flows over the land rather than seeping into the ground.
Runoff
A hole drilled or dug down below the water table from which water is moved to the surface.
Well
A smaller stream that flows into a larger stream.
Tributary
And imaginary line that separates the watershed of one stream from the watershed of another stream.
Divide
The amount of water a stream carries.
Discharge
Water in cracks and pores spaces in rock below earths surface.
Groundwater
An area of land that is covered with shallow water during part or all of the year.
Wetland
The change of liquid water into water vapor.
Evaporation
Evaporation of water from plants.
Transpiration
A man-made lake.
Reservoir
Supplying water to areas of dry land to make them suitable for growing crops.
Irrigation
Well that flows on its own without being pumped.
Artesian Well
A place where water flows out of the ground.
Spring
A porous and permeable layer of rock from which groundwater can be pumped.
Aquifer
Substance that water can pass through.
Permeable
“Empty Spaces” in the bedrock and soil that can be filled with air or water.
Pore Spaces
Type of underground passage that forms when groundwater dissolves limestone or dolomite.
Cavern
Substance that water can not pass through.
Impermeable
Widely spread source of pollution that can’t be tied to a specific point of origin.
Nonpoint Source
The amount of pore spaces in rock.
Porosity
Rain, Snow, Sleet, or Hail.
Precipitation
Specific source of pollution that can be identified.
Point Source
The movement of water between plants and animals, the atmosphere, Earth’s surface and underground.
Water Cycle
An area that is drained by a river or system of rivers; a drainage basin.
