Freedom Flashcards
What is freedom?
Freedom is the power, rooted in reason and will, to act or not to act to do this or that, and so to perform deliberate actions on one’s own responsibility.
What is free will?
The human capacity to act among courses of action. Free will is required for a person to possess moral responsibility, choosing to good rather than bad.
State the quote CCC 1731
“Freedom is the power, rooted in reason and will, to act or not to act to do this or that, and so to perform deliberate actions on one’s own responsibility. By free will one shapes one’s own life. Human freedom is a force for growth and maturity in truth and goodness; it attains its perfection when directed towards God, our beatitude.”
What is human freedom?
Human freedom is a force for growth and maturity in truth and goodness; it attains its perfection when directed towards God, our beatitude
Why is free will not always used for good?
The lingering effects of original sin means human nature is “subject to error and inclined to evil” (CCC 1923).
Why did God give people freedom? (2)
Created with free will and full ability to choose goodness and love that God has to offer to all who accept God into their life.
As everyone was created in God’s image they have been given equality dignity to be treated well
Why is free will important? (2)
“God’s free initiative demands man’s free response, for God has created man in his image by conferring on him, along with freedom, the power to know him and love him. The soul only enters freely into the communion of love” (CCC 2002).
without free will human would be wired to doing good, unable to discern right from wrong. Robbed from true freedom, proving God’s love.
How does a person achieve freedom?
“For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery…You were called for freedom…Do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love.” Galatians 5:1
How do people follow Jesus? (3)
know Jesus, If people do not know him they do not know how to relate to him and draw upon the freedom he offers
know teachings of Jesus. They need to know how the teachings of Jesus relate to their lives.
relate with Jesus personally and to live as he taught
What is external freedom?
Includes freedom from factors outside ourselves that threaten or destroy our power to exercise choice,
eg. we should be free from poverty or coercion. If a person is suffering starvation, then he or she may be coerced into behaviour or actions to meet basic needs; he or she cannot pursue an education that can provide that person with more life choices for their future.
What is internal freedom?
factors that come from our interior that inhibit our freedom of choice
eg. freedom from fear: If we are free from fear, then we can exercise our ability to make good moral choices without the apprehension of negative consequences.
Why is doing good being free? (2)
- like God bestowed freedom on christians because of love, and we must display freedom by loving neighbours, embodying christlikeness
- when we keep to God’s decrees of doing good and loving we discover original fulfilment and freedom.
Why is Jesus death important for human freedom? (2)
Because of Jesus’ death catholics are free from condemnation and allows them to achieve true internal freedom.
God’s love intertwined with Christ’s resurrection allows christians to achieve both external and internal freedom, unbound from our past or sin, free to do what is right.
What is consumerism?
the belief that personal wellbeing and happiness depend, to a very large extent, on the level of personal consumption, particularly on the purchase of material goods.
Why does consumerism oppose Catholic’s perspective on freedom? (3)
- instead of being consumed with righteousness and loving others, consumed instead with material possessions and loving things.
- false happiness that evaporates and demands the purchase of more and more consumer goods
accurately depicting addiction of temporary happiness - inner freedom is destroyed as people become slaves to addiction of materials, misinterpreting what true freedom is
Mark 10:25-26
“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
Explain the quote Mark 10:25-26 “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
Materialism leads away from God, though the more externally free a rich person is, their internal freedom as it corrode what is good, reshape who we are and distort the purpose for which christians have been created to follow Gods teaching
(Matthew 6:24)
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
Explain the quote (Matthew 6:24) “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
slave to consumerism, temporary happiness controls lives and their happiness and worth is defined by what they by rather than the unchanging worth that Christ died on the cross for.
Explain the Catholic view on consumerism. (2)
freedom is lost; restricted and based on possessions that will fade away
consumerism challenges concept of true freedom by taking away the true purpose of loving others, replacing it with a sense of self worth that only serves to restrict itself.
