Free Will and Determinism Flashcards
1
Q
free will
A
- idea we have a choice and play an active role in how we behave
- assumes individuals are free to choose their behaviour and are self-determined
2
Q
determinism
A
- view that free will is an illusion and our behaviour governed by internal and external forces over which we have no control
3
Q
scientific emphasis on causal relationships
A
- seeks to discover whether independent variables cause changes in dependent variable
- establishing cause and effect relationships between variables
4
Q
hard determinism
A
- view forces outside our control shape our behaviour
- seen as incompatible with free will
5
Q
soft determinism
A
- behaviour constrained by biological make-up or environment to a certain extent
- some behaviours more constraint than others
- element of free will in all behaviour
- e.g. SLT takes into account through motivation in ARMM
6
Q
biological determinism
A
- all human behaviour innate and determined by genes
- e.g. serotonin imbalance causing OCD
7
Q
environmental determinism
A
- behaviour determined by outside forces,
- caused by previous experiences, learning through CC/OC
- e.g. cupboard Love associations
8
Q
psychic determinism
A
behaviour a result of childhood experiences and innate drives
- e.g. failure at anal stage causes anal retentive - controlling/obessesive
