what is compatiblism?
The claim that determinism is compatible with freedom of the will.
what is incompatiblism?
The claim that determinism is incompatible with freedom of the will.
- Consequence argument came up with determinism, free will, incompatibilism (that free will and determinism are incompatible)
determinism
everything is predetermined after big bang
so no free will
how does determinism differ from physicalsm?
determinism goes further than physicalism. Physicalism says everything is physical, determinsm says every physical aspect has a certain function with predetermined consequences. But it does not only entail physical
Physicalism is a claim about what there is in the world — namely, only physical stuff. It can also be
taken as the claim that all information is physical information. In contrast, determinism is the claim that
every state of the world is fully determined by previous states. Determinism does not entail physicalism,
as dualism can also be deterministic (all mental states are also determined). Conversely, physicalism does
not entail determinism (even if all information is physical information, physical states might not be
determined solely by previous states of the world).
what is the principle of alternate possibilites?
An agent is responsible for an action only if she could have done otherwise
so, free will
